This all-levels contact improvisation workshop with Hudson Valley-based teacher Jacob Combe is an invitation to explore our true nature as vertebrates (spinal beings) — and to discover how exploration can transform the way we move, alone and in connection.
We'll dive into rich, expansive research in spinal articulation and mobility called "Material for the Spine," developed by Steve Paxton (one of the founders of Contact Improvisation), which I've studied with Mark Young, Lilianna Kane, and Nica Portavia. I'll share specific movement pathways that Steve explored (referred to as puzzles and forms), focusing mainly on the Helix Roll, and we'll practice together how embodying this spiral pattern can enrich and inform our contact improvisation. Weight sharing techniques will be part of this workshop. We'll also move through improvisational scores designed to open up new perspectives in how we sense and respond.
Throughout, we'll approach practice with focus and gentle spaciousness.
The evening jam will be a time to integrate and enjoy the fruits of our labor. I will facilitate a lead in that grounds us before open dancing.
I'm excited to move with you, Philly. Let's keep dancing.
What to bring: Water, comfy clothes (ideally long sleeves and long pants), kneepads, a meditation cushion (optional), and a journal (optional).
A request: Please pre-register for this event — it really helps with planning and preparation.
